Welcome to the Interviews page, to read interviews that I have had recently or previous author interview that I did for the site, go to the bottom of the page and click on the link.
I will be interviewing an author or editor here every month. This month I interviewed author Jeanine Krock.
Kyla: Welcome, Jeanine. Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed by me. =) Can you tell us about your latest release?
Jeanine: Hello Kyla. Thank you very much for interviewing me. My latest release is a vampire novel telling the story of a vampire warrior called Kieran and his soulmate Nuriya, who is the daughter of a fairy and a human father. She is chosen by the magic community to become the living assurance for another decade of peace between the fairies, who call themselves the children of the light, and their darker siblings, the vampires. Grown up in the human world Nuriya naturally wants to have a say in this matter, especially as the so called venus treaty includes not only her transformation into a bloodsucking fiend but, even worse, being stuck for the next 120 years with the most arrogant person she ever met: the vampire Kieran.
Kyla: Can you tell us what you are working on just now?
Jeanine: I received some wonderful reader feedback on the book described above and I feel very privileged that some people seem to be looking forward to buy a follow-up. So right now my agent and publisher are busy negotiating the contract for a sequel. I just finished the first chapter and I am afraid I did already fall seriously in love with the male central characters.
I am going to write down the story of Estelle, a clairvoyant who is not at all crazy about her sister Nuriya becoming a vampire. Or maybe just that. For someone who despises drinking blood as much as she does, Estelle is soon quite involved with two pretty hot male vampires, who seem to set out to drive her out of her mind.
Kyla: I noticed that you have a Blog called Sensual Ladies, care to tell us about it?
Jeanine: Sensual Ladies is a group of 12 female writers. We met at the Booklover Conference in Wiesbaden, Germany, and became friends during the last years. Among other things, we write erotic novels. At one point we felt, that although a website www.sensual-books.de is an excellent platform to promote books, we wanted to communicate more frequently with our (mostly female) readers. So we recently started blogging, which is fun to do.
Kyla: Now from the lecture you gave at the Booklover Convention, I know you have an interest in Scottish history. With Scotland being my homeland I would love to know when this began.
Jeanine: Unlike many authors from the USA, I do not know of any Scottish ancestors in our family tree. Having travelled quite a bit in my life, I must admit that I never made it that far up north before. And suddenly everything became all tartan. Probably it started with me reading Beyond the Tweed: A Tour of Scotland in 1858 from German author Theodor Fontane, then a friend told me about Bite Me, a vampire magazine from Glasgow and a few weeks later I met a gorgeous Scot, daring to wear his kilt even in rainy southern Germany. At the same time I came across a podcast (http://tartan.pnohosting.ca/, again from Glasgow, promoting new Scottish bands of all different musical directions. Does one little author need more hints to know: that's where my next story will take place? I started immediately to read through umpteen history books even before I booked my first trip to your country. As a former costume designer I take much interest in history anyway and it was soon clear that I wanted to write something historic and romantic at the same time. When I found out that there are quite a few books about hot hunks who are rumbling the highlands of Scotland it was long too late, I had just finished my third chapter of a novel which is situated in the western highlands of Scotland at the beginning of the 18th century.
Kyla: Tell us who your favourite authors are, do you have any recommendations about books we just have to read?
Jeanine: There are many fabulous authors and stories out there. I would gladly go through my bookshelves and pick out a few for you. Unfortunately my books are - while I am writing this - on their way to my new home, a tiny cottage in northern Germany, so be warned I am coming closer now. ;-) Back to your question. As I said earlier, I like to read history books which unfortunately are mostly not very entertaining.
As for novels, I recently enjoyed Shana Abé's, The Dream Thief very much. Set in 18th-century England and the Carpathian Mountains, the story is about creatures who can shape-shift into dragons. When it comes to vampires surely Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake is a must read. I like Sherrilyn Kenyon's, Dark-Hunter series very much, I love Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse, The Argeneau Series by Lynsay Sands and A Taste of Darkness by Nina Bangs is a wonderful book, too. Strangely enough I did not read many highlander novels so far, but I gladly recommend On a Highland Shore from Kathleen Givens who is not only a great author but a dear friend, too. Besides all kinds of romance I enjoy reading the books of Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, in my home you would find Oscar Wilde, Shelley and Byron side by side with P.G. Woodehouse, Minette Walters or Ian Rankin, to name but a few. Oh, and sometimes I also read in German.
Unfortunately I share a common fate with my more famous German speaking colleagues. Most will probably never find their books translated into English - unless they will become a bestselling author like e. g. Cornelia Funk,e (Inkheart) or famous Mr. Goethe. The international market works the other way round, which as a reader I naturally enjoy, as the English speaking world holds a tremendous amount of great books.
Kyla: Thanks for these recommendations; I see I have a new author in Shana to explore. It was wonderful meeting you at the Booklover Convention in Germany, Jeanine, one final question. Please tell us where we can purchase your fabulous books and where we can find out all about your latest news.
Jeanine: I really enjoyed meeting you and I wish we'd had more time to talk. My books are available from most German online-bookstores e. g. Amazon www.amazon.de. I think they send books to the UK, too. At least I had never problems buying books at Amazon.co.uk. Why they sell my first novel Wege in die Dunkelheit (Pathway to Darkness) but not Venuspakt, I have no idea. Please contact me, in case you have problems with your order or try www.ubooksshop.de (mail-order shop of my publishing house).
You can find out everything about me as well as a link to my books on my website: www.jeaninekrock.de. An English version should be online by next year.
Thank you and take good care.
Thank you to Jeanine for her interview answers. Look out for a great interview with author Beth Kery next month.
