Interview with Kyla Logan
By Ciarra Sims for the Changeling Press Reader Loop
Ciarra: What made you want to write?
Kyla: I have been reading romance books since I was able to go into the adult part of the library to choose books for my Gran. I don't think she realized I was actually reading them when I was 12 years old.
I would make up little plot ideas in my head all those years ago, but just didn't have the courage to actually sit down and put my ideas on paper. That only happened about this time last year.
Ciarra: If you weren't a writer what would your next career choice be?
Kyla: Well I am a trained nurse, have been for more years than I can remember. But due to ill health I was forced to stop working at the hospital. So I went back to college, and have an HND in Textile Art. I actually run my own little business for 3 years, making wall hanging, attending craft fairs and having exhibitions selling my work. I only do a little now, just to keep my 'hand in' so to speak. I still make my own cards to send at Birthday's and Christmas.
Ciarra: If you could write an anthology with any writer(s) you wanted, who would they be?
Kyla: That is a hard one Ciarra; there are so many talented authors that it's hard to choose one or two. =) I would LOVE to be involved in one with my friends Isabella Jordan and Dee S. Knight.
Ciarra: Do you think writing is a talent you are born with or can it be learned?
Kyla: I think that you have to have good story telling skills. If you can't make up a good plot, then where would your book be? I think you can learn to be as error free in your writing as possible. That can only come with actually finishing your story and working with your editor. I have learned a LOT from Maryam.
Ciarra: What sub-genre's do you write in…like fantasy, contemporary etc.? What new avenue do you hope to explore in your writing later in your career?
Kyla: I like to write and read anything Paranormal; be it Vampire or Shape Shifter. I want to do more Shape Shifter books, not only with cats as my Catari series is, but to branch out to other species. I would love to write a Vampire book. Straight contemporary doesn't interest me at all. If I did do one, it would be with a paranormal plot running through it.
Ciarra: We all know the glamorous life an author leads-LOL, what do you do to unwind?
Kyla: Glamorous? I have my false teeth out and my bed socks on! Lol Just kidding. Well I would love to say that I read erotic romance books, but it becoming harder and harder to find time to read for pleasure. When I do read it's to research something for a plot idea.
Saying that, when I am sitting with hubby in the evening (if he is not working or I am not doing something on the computer) I will do some stitching or make some parts to go on cards. I find that very relaxing. =)
Ciarra: How do you see ebooks in the future, marketwise?
Kyla: I first came across e-books and e-publishers three years ago Ciarra. The growth in choice, of both sub-genres and publishers has been amazing. I honestly think that only good things are going to happen to this industry. The scope for growth is still not tapped to the fullest potential. I just feel so lucky that I am part of this company and this business. =)
Ciarra: When you write, do you put yourself in the scene and react as yourself or do you become the character?
Kyla: You know that's something that I never really thought about. I would say I put myself in the scene more than becoming the character.
Ciarra: If you were transported to any time period, other than the present, which would it be?
Kyla: The future. Somewhere on a planet out in space preferably.
Ciarra: In regards to the books you've written, which would you like to become one of the characters in…Which character?
Kyla: I really don't know, with just the one out. I am actually just getting started with a paranormal set in the Highlands of Scotland. The heroine is a high priestess. Now she is totally UNLIKE how I have written Leah or Ashley, but I like her bluntness. Talk about her language!
Ciarra: I've heard some writer's dress in costume when they want to get into their characters' heads and the story. How do you get in you character's head?
Kyla: I just dress in loose clothing so I am comfortable at my laptop. If I dressed as Catarian women do I would be in a very brief night slip. lol
How do I get into their heads? I just had a vision of how I wanted Darius to act. He was THE alpha male and he was going to have Leah as his mate one way or another. But in the end he had to give her a choice.
Ciarra: Writing those hot, sexy scenes requires a certain state of mind. How do you get in the mood?
Kyla: I make sure my hubby is handy to try out new scenes. He is such a help with them. lolol
Ciarra: What advice would you give to a budding author on how to make a good book terrific?
Kyla: Someone with more experience would be able to answer this one better. But don't be afraid of the white, blank screen/paper. Get your first thoughts down when you think of something. Don't wait or you will loose the train of thought. Find some good crit partners. They are invaluable in bouncing ideas, or to let you know if you changed POV when you shouldn't. Or if that part was just not active enough. You have to do some reading on what makes for active writing. Don't write passive. I am still learning that one.
And listen to advice.
Ciarra: Tell us something about yourself that you have not confided to an audience before.
Kyla: I used to review erotic romance books. =)
